America cannot extol the virtues of democracy at the point of a sword. We are committed by this administration to "stay the course" on which we are embarked because to do otherwise would be to "cut and run." Our president says that would be a sign of weakness and would embolden and encourage the terrorists. That assertion is probably true so long as the current administration stays in power.
True democracy, however, does not require a steadfast diplomacy, but rather an open declaration of the will of the people. A new course dictated by a majority of voters is the true mandate that will be understood by other nations, and it will demonstrate the power of a democracy, not a weakness. The sneering assertion that we "cut and run" will be shown for what it is, a political ploy fostered by those in power who want to retain control of the Senate, House and the Administration.
A change in direction is the strongest message we can send to those who would so us harm. It will show that we are a caring people who want to do the right thing. Our incursions into other lands should cease, and out of that response we will emerge as an even greater world leader, one that approaches problems with diplomacy rather than threats.
The elections in 2008 are the most important we will ever experience. Let us prepare for the votes that will send us on a new course.
Did you hear that poor old Jimmy Carter is now coming under fire for his comment last week that "This administration is the worst in history." Of course, he was answering the question of a reporter "Between Nixon and Bush, which do you feel has the worst foreign policy?" and his answer was "THIS administration is the worst in history..." meaning that between the two, THIS one is the worst. But...the truth never sounds as good to the public as the edited sound-bites. Oyveh!
