A British newspaper has reported that Tony Blair was despaired by the lack of adequate planning in the Bush administration for the aftermath of the Iraq invasion. That concern was voiced in London as early as March, 2002, but Blair continued to support Bush and now must suffer the penalties for his involvement. He resigns his PM post effective June 27. It is too bad that the United States does not have a similar method of censure for our president. Despite his failures Bush will continue in office until his term expires. Much of our problems can be attributed to the fact that Bush surrounded himself with political cronies who were totally unfit for the job. He had bad advice, and our country now suffers from a situation brought on by a lack of planning and foresight. We are told by the Bush administration that we are trying to bring democracy to the Iraq people. This is a concept totally foreign to a people who have been ruled by tyrants. Now they are engaged in a civil war to determine which tyrant will be the next to take command.
We have lost thousands of our young men in a futile effort to liberate a people who now seem to hate us and want us to get out of their country.
Voters in America must share some of the blame. We select our president on the basis of popularity and the financial support of those with vested interests. We do not ask the most vital questions during an election, such as: "What best qualifies this candidate to be president?' , and "What does his or her proposals bring to the office?"
Now we are faced with the selection of a new president from a variety of candidates. I am disturbed by the recent emergence of another film idol, whose ponderous demeanor has presidential-like qualities and seems to be attracting a lot of Republican support. Yes, I refer to Fred Thompson, who no doubt would like to be another Reagan-type president. He will get a lot of backing because the American public already has been conditioned to accept Thompson as a mighty leader because of his presentations on screen. This is all fluff and nonsense, but if history repeats itself, we will get another candidate who will bear watching.....
