The Time Is Near

This is the generation that will see ancient prophecies unfold, according to the Rev. John Hagee and others in the ministries of Christian faith. We are about to see the beginning of Armageddon, and our spiritual leaders are looking skyward every day in anticipation of the event. In light of recent political news here on earth, perhaps it would be prudent to lower our gaze toward those seeking office for the most powerful position in the world (president of the U.S.).

The most recent poll indicates that Barack Obama has pulled ahead of Senator Clinton and others in Iowa, and that he may be the front runner for the Democratic primary. Obama brings much to the table for consideration. First, he opposed the war in Iraq. a disastrous Bush administration experiment that decimated our economy with a $1 trillion price tag. Next, he proposed a turnaround in expenditures to focus more on domestic problems. Finally, he proposes as president he will meet with Iranian leaders to seek peaceful solutions to our differences. His background is unique, having lived in a Muslim environment for several years where he no doubt acquired some insight into the Middle East mind. This may bring him closer to achieving some harmony with those who seem to hate the Americans so much. These attributes are all helpful toward getting Obama elected head of the most powerful nation in the world.

These events should provide inspiration to the Rev. Hagee and others who seem to eagerly await the onslaught of Armageddon. The scenario calls for a world leader to emerge in these perilous times who will bring world peace for a period of seven years (about the time of a typical presidential rule) after which a sudden surprising move by the leader will plunge us into a world war. What could that event be? It could be a renouncing of support for the Israelis which would encourage the Muslims to begin their long awaited war. The aftermath could reveal our leader to be the anti-christ heralded in ancient prophecy. Of course it would be too late to reverse the process set in motion, and the Rev. Hagee would no doubt take his congregation to the mountain top to await transport to Heaven. As for the Muslims. all the young men would happily line up for their journey to paradise where they would be bedded each with 70 virgins.

Well, what about the rest of us? Most Americans are secular or ambivalent about religion even though they do not openly admit it.....and in our rage we will no doubt again unite as we were in World War 11 when we were deceived and attacked by the Japanese. I remember that in 1941 we were a peaceful nation without war experience, but we responded to that outrage with a rather clumsy but effective victory over the forces of evil.

Today members of the world community must remember that although we are a peaceful nation, we are more experienced in warfare and that we have an awesome array of weapons, including enough nuclear warheads to fry most of the planet. It won't be a pretty sight but when the smoke clears some of us will still be standing.....perhaps enough to rebuild this world into an everlasting monument to peace. I only hope that the religious zealots come to their senses in time to avert Armageddon.
