The Wonder of it All

While we watch the political race to the finish line, we sometimes wonder if it is worth all the work and sacrifice the candidates endure. What's in it that attracts the best and the worst to seek the highest office in the land? Is it the power and the glory, or an honest effort to do the best that one can to build a better country?  How much of it is ego, having achieved more than enough in material wealth, what's left to make one's life better?

When I see Hillary Clinton struggle in an uphill climb to the white house, I see a person possessed with a need to win......and I wonder why. Here is a woman with a 100 million dollar bank account, and still she persists toward a goal that is not all that great. Presidents are scorned at times and lauded during good times. It's a crap shoot in today's world what you will get. I can only conclude as I watch her agonize against overwhelming odds that she is a true believer in the do-good theory; that we are here on earth to do the best that we can for humanity and nothing else is important. If that is true we owe her the chance to prove it. She should be elected despite the obstacles, and allowed to realize her dreams to come true.

About Me

I was born in 1921 in Jarrell's Valley, W.Va., right in the middle of the famous coal mine war....graduated from Morris Harvey college (now Charleston University) and was a columnist for the Charleston Daily Mail... moved to Florida in 1955... appointed assistant city manager in 1957 and continued city management career in various locales until 1985, then retired. During the early sixties I was program chair for the Ridge League of Municipalities, an organization of 22 cities in Central Florida who met each month to exchange information of an educational nature. I have been a writer most of my life, starting in high school as sports editor , then in the US Navy as editor of the base newspaper in Coca Solo, Panama. In addition to writing for the Charleston Daily Mail for five years, I served as municipal reporter for the Lakeland Ledger two years. I have a high regard for the power of words.
